A face-to-face digital technologies education programme for students / ākonga in Years 3 to 8.

Digital Ignition | Māpura Matihiko has been created in close consultation with leading education experts and cultural advisors. Partnering with the Ministry of Education, our programme is delivered at no cost to schools and kura by a team of world-class facilitators. Digital Ignition | Māpura Matihiko has been created to support the introduction of the new Digital Technologies and Hangarau Matihiko curriculum content into primary and intermediate schools and kura. Each workshop is designed to ignite a sense of capability in students as it builds skills and understanding of digital technologies through fun and engaging activities.

The programme is delivered as six modules, each made up of three face-to-face, curriculum aligned workshops of 60 minutes. These workshops are tailored to the needs of specific year groups and are designed to be delivered to groups of between 20 and 30 students.  Each of our six modules is designed for a specific year group from Year 3 to Year 8. Every student carries within them a unique perspective and set of strengths.  By making digital technologies fun and interactive, Digital Ignition | Māpura Matihiko provides students / ākonga an opportunity to explore these strengths and develop their digital skills in creative and inventive ways.

About the programme

Module outline

Break it Down

Year 3

Students are introduced to the concept of algorithmic thinking in a simple way. Students will understand that complex tasks are comprised of a series of smaller, unambiguous steps, and practice breaking every day activities into such steps.

Build it Up

Year 4

Students practice algorithmic thinking. Students explore and examine items to determine how they are made up of smaller component parts (using techniques such as ‘unmaking’), and develop algorithms to ‘rebuild’ those items.

The Future Factory

Year 5

Students explore using digital tools to design novel solutions to real-world problems. Students will understand that technology is a tool and that digital solutions need to keep end users and uses in mind. Students will examine 3D printing and 3D modelling software as examples of digital tools.

Bits and Bots

Year 6

Students are introduced to the fundamentals of programming and digital data representation. Students will use their programming and understanding of binary to create binary representations of images and text, and to program mBot – a small robot that can spin, move and flash lights.

Go Robot!

Year 7

Students are introduced to the idea that robots are designed by humans to perform specific functions. Students will apply computational thinking to develop code to get a robot to perform specific functions.

Think like a Game Maker

Year 8

Students explore one of the many career paths that are open to people with digital technologies skills and understand that digital technologies skills are important for young job seekers. Students consider different factors that are important when building technology for commercial use.
